Its natural distribution ranges from Kwikila in Central Province to Malalaua in Gulf Province. Commercial harvesting of PNG sandalwood began in the late 1800s. The essential oil extracted from the heartwood is utilized in the perfume, cosmetic, and aromatherapy industries. The genus Santalum comprises approximately 18 species, including Santalum macgregorii, Santalum spicatum, and Santalum album. Santalum macgregorii possess a uniquely distinctive top/ heart-note compared to other sandalwoods. The scent begins with a sweet floral top note that quickly transitions into a deep, rich vanilla/balsamic heart note during the drydown. This results in a warm, spicy/amber signature complemented by woody undertones, culminating in a balanced and sophisticated aroma.
