Fondo Bozzole Cocai Lambrusco

From Dylan at Little Thing Wine: Many people know Lambrusco as the crap exported to the United States in the late 20th century. Dark and sweetened into oblivion for the American Coca-Cola palate, it was a far cry from the Lambrusco Italians drink in Italy—and thankfully a far cry from the Lambrusco imported to the US these days. At its best, Lambrusco is dry, juicy, lightly sparkling, slightly bitter red wine. I call it mood-enhancement juice. It’s impossible not to be happier after having a glass. This Lambrusco is even further from that previous image of over-sweetened soda juice. This is rosé-style Lambrusco; a dry, pink sparkling wine made from Lambrusco Marani, one of the many variant grapes of Lambrusco. It’s absolutely Lambrusco, but it’s also absolutely rosé. It’s all cherry-red fruit and flowers—violet, iris, peony. Awakening in a bottle. There’s a silken quality to the whole thing, a creaminess that is cut through with fine, frizzante bubbles. With so much going on with the palate, the ultra dry finish almost comes as a surprise, but a very welcome one. This is just so much fun. It feels important to point out that many of the best-loved foods in the world come from Emilia-Romagna, the home of Lambrusco. I’m talking about Parmigiano-Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, mortadella, Balsamico di Modena, Bolognese, tortellini, tagliatelle…the list goes on.
