THE TRUTH BEHIND CHILDHOOD OBESITY: SMALL BODIES, BIG THREAT
Childhood obesity has evolved into one of the most significant global health challenges of our time, with profound metabolic, cardiovascular, endocrine, and psychosocial consequences. It not only affects the current health and quality of life of children but also shapes their long-term health trajectories. Addressing childhood obesity therefore requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach that goes beyond a single specialty. This book was developed in response to this critical need. The primary aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based, and clinically relevant understanding of childhood obesity. The book is structured to cover a wide spectrum—from pathophysiology and genetic predisposition to environmental factors, from the impact of modern lifestyle to multisystem consequences, from psychosocial dimensions to prevention and treatment strategies. In doing so, it establishes a strong bridge between scientific knowledge and clinical practice. In the existing literature, childhood obesity is often addressed in a fragmented manner, with separate focus on metabolic, nutritional, or surgical aspects. However, resources that integrate these perspectives into a unified and clinically applicable framework remain limited. This book aims to fill that gap by bringing together pediatric endocrinology, pediatric surgery, child psychiatry, and nutrition science within a single, cohesive volume. One of the key strengths of this book lies in its integrative and patient-centered perspective. Childhood obesity is not approached solely as a biological condition but as a complex interplay of environmental, behavioral, and psychosocial factors. Topics such as modern lifestyle challenges, family dynamics, screen dependency, eating behaviors, and stigma—often underrepresented in clinical resources—are addressed alongside medical and surgical treatment options within a multidisciplinary framework. This book is intended for pediatric endocrinologists, pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, child psychiatrists, dietitians, and all healthcare professionals involved in the management of childhood obesity. It also serves as a valuable resource for trainees and researchers seeking a comprehensive yet practical guide. By supporting clinical decision-making, enhancing multidisciplinary collaboration, and improving patient outcomes, this book aims to make a meaningful contribution to the field. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all contributing authors and section editors, whose expertise and dedication have made this work possible. Their collective effort has significantly enriched the scientific value of this book. It is my hope that this book will foster a more holistic, evidence-based, and compassionate approach to childhood obesity, recognizing that behind every small body lies a significant and complex challenge.
