Solanum betaceum ★ TAMARILLO TREE TOMATO
A fast-growing, semi-woody shrub or small tree with an upright, branching habit and a soft, slightly open canopy. It produces large, broad, heart-shaped leaves with a slightly velvety texture, giving it a lush, tropical appearance. The stems are green to purplish and somewhat brittle when young. As it matures, the plant develops a more structured form with a short trunk and multiple fruiting branches. It begins bearing fruit relatively early, often within the first year under favourable conditions. Advantages: • Produces attractive, egg-shaped fruits with golden-yellow skin and rich red or yellow pulp • Fast-growing and early fruiting, providing quick returns • Adds a tropical, lush look to gardens and landscapes • Edible fruits with a tangy-sweet flavour, great for juices and fresh eating • Suitable for both home gardens and small-scale production Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade. Performs best with good sunlight but benefits from slight protection in very harsh, dry heat. Water Tolerance: Moderate. Requires consistent moisture for good fruiting, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Somewhat sensitive to prolonged drought. Mature Height: 2 – 4 metres in open ground; can be maintained at 1.5 – 2.5 metres with pruning. Mature Spread: 2 – 3 metres, forming a moderately wide, open canopy.
