Château La Conseillante Pomerol 2020
Pomerol 2020 88% Merlot 12% Cabernet Franc Region: Bordeaux ESTATE HISTORY It has been 300 years now since Catherine Conseillan purchased the estate. In addition to her name, her legacy lives on in a certain way of thinking at the estate. Louis Nicolas bought the property in 1871 when it totalled 12 hectares (30 acres) of vines, shrewdly planted on soils made up of a diversity of clays. Five generations and 147 vintages later, the mosaic of vine plots is still the same. Successive owners each inherited the same vision and precious savoir-faire. The family attachment to this place is profound, while the Nicolas family’s heart-felt wish is to forever ensure La Conseillante’s unique style. La Conseillante thus continues on that same path. Led by Marielle Cazaux and partnered by Michel Rolland, the team continues to perfect its knowledge of these terroirs in the vineyard and to fine-tune its work in the cellars. TERROIR Soils: 60% clay & 40% sandy gravel La Conseillante has its own unique feature, and that is its position. Its soils are not only on the Pomerol plateau but also cross over into the Saint-Emilion appellation. Its vineyard covers 12 hectares (nearly 30 acres) and and different nuances of soil-type (clay soils to the north-east and gravel soils to the south-west). La Conseillante is made up of a patchwork of sixteen vineyard plots, the oldest of which was planted in 1958. Four soil-types have been categorised within this mosaic of vines. VITICULTURE Viticulture at La Conseillante focused on managing the hot, dry summer to preserve freshness. The team maintained a generous leaf canopy to shade the grapes from intense sun, while the estate's clay and gravel soils provided vital water retention to prevent vine stress. Harvesting was executed with plot-by-plot precision, taking place early in the morning to capture the fruit at peak aromatic freshness. WINEMAKING Winemaker Marielle Cazaux prioritized freshness and precision through gentle vinification in temperature-controlled concrete vats. The team used soft pump-overs instead of aggressive punching down to ensure the tannins remained exceptionally silky and fine. The wine was then aged for eighteen months, using seventy percent new French oak barrels alongside thirty percent in amphorae and large oak foudres. This reduced oak influence successfully preserved the estate's signature floral brightness and pure, vibrant fruit character. TASTING & FOOD PAIRINGS The 2020 La Conseillante is an exceptionally elegant Pomerol, offering intense aromas of black raspberries, violets, dark chocolate, and licorice, all underpinned by a distinct iron and truffle mineral note. On the palate, it is remarkably silky and vibrant, balancing deep blue and black fruit concentration with a fresh, chalky precision and fine-grained, seamless tannins. This sophisticated texture makes it an incredible match for slow-roasted milk-fed veal, roasted squab, or a classic rack of lamb encrusted with herbs. It also pairs wonderfully with dishes featuring chanterelle or porcini mushrooms, as well as refined, semi-hard cheeses like Saint-Nectaire or aged Brie. *Please note the image is of a representative bottle.
