Flint was a factory town that took to the sport quickly, and the Generals spent the better part of two decades as the thing to do on a winter night downtown. The peak came in the spring of 1984. Flint swept the Toledo Goaldiggers in a best-of-seven final to take the Turner Cup — the franchise's first and only championship in its original run, and still the high-water mark of professional hockey in the city. It ended abruptly. A dispute with the IMA Sports Arena over weekend playing dates pushed ownership to move the franchise to Saginaw in July 1985, barely a year after the title. The Generals name was revived in Flint by later clubs, but the IMA years are the ones people mean when they talk about Generals hockey.
