Art Deco Purple Paste Stone Bracelet

The use of paste, named after its pioneer Joseph Strasser was highly popularised during the Georgian and Victorian eras and continued in popularity in to the first part of the 20th century. Paste is a highly specialized lead glass that is formulated, melted and hand cut to imitate natural gemstones as distinct from the more ordinary modern glass or plastic. Then a technique called foiling was used where a microscopic sheet of silver, copper or coloured metallic foil was placed the base of the setting. This then acts as a mirror reflecting ambient light through the stone to multiply its brightness and deepen the colour saturation. This lovely example has 10 fully faceted and prong set stones set in gold tone metal with a traditional fold in clasp. Wrists were not super large back in the day, so the length end to end is 15cms.
