Antique French Terracotta Gargoulette Water Jug with Three Handles

This antique French terracotta water jug has a wonderfully distinctive three-handled form, with two handles at the shoulders and a larger bail handle rising above its rounded body. A small original spout projects from the front, making the jug especially interesting to look at from every angle. Made for practical everyday use, these substantial terracotta jugs were used in southern France for carrying and keeping water cool, with their rounded forms and multiple handles making them easier to lift, carry, and pour. Some similar examples were also used for storing walnut oil, reflecting the wonderfully versatile nature of these old provincial vessels. The warm honey-brown glaze has the beautiful variation that comes with age, with softly mottled color, small marks, and the pleasing irregularities of handmade pottery. It has an incised number 5 on the front, most likely indicating its original size or capacity. I love the way the generous proportions and unusual three-handle silhouette give this humble utilitarian piece such presence today. Display it on a console, in a collection of French pottery, or on a table with a few gathered branches for an easy touch of French country character. Good antique condition with a tight hairline. The jug has expected surface variations, minor marks, glaze irregularities, and other signs of age consistent with handmade antique pottery.
