AMERICAN APATHY by Kyle and Kelly Phelps (Centerville, OH)
AMERICAN APATHY Kyle and Kelly Phelps (Centerville, OH) Ceramic Mix Media, 40 H x 24” W x 15” D Artwork: This ceramic figurative sculpture depicts ICE agents violently detaining an immigrant family, highlighting the fear, trauma, and instability experienced by many immigrant communities. The American flag backdrop functions both as a beacon of hope and opportunity and as a symbol of hate, intolerance, and division, reflecting the contradictions embedded within the American experience. Artist Statement: The work is informed by current events that have placed the United States in troubled times. The work "Insurrection" reflects on the events of January 6, 2021, which forever altered the political and social fabric of this country. The riot carried out in support of President Trump created an atmosphere of denial, mistrust, and disregard for free and fair elections that continues to cast a dark shadow over American society. The erosion of political civility has only been further intensified by the release and continued defense of individuals involved in the January 6 attack. The work "American Apathy" examines how the United States government has shifted from empathy toward immigrants to a growing sense of indifference and hostility. The sculpture is informed by current events, including the over militarized approach to policing, and the corrupt dealings of the ICE/Immigration Enforcement. "The American Apathy" is the direct opposite of the empathic values this country stood for.
