Folk Art Horseshoe Armchair, American, Mid-20th Century

Built entirely from used horseshoes — worn thin at the toe, nail holes still open — cut, bent, and welded into a chair by hand. The back opens into a fan. The arms scroll. Even the feet finish in small forged flourishes that serve no structural purpose at all. Horseshoe furniture belongs to a long American vernacular tradition: shop pieces made from spent shoes, part demonstration of a blacksmith’s skill and part accumulated luck. Typically improvised rather than made to a standard pattern, every surviving example has its own eccentricities. This was the first piece of furniture Richard bought after purchasing the house, and it has been his lucky horseshoe chair at Flamingo Estate ever since. Old red paint throughout, worn back to bare iron across the seat and arm rails. Exceptionally heavy, solid, and entirely unrestored.
