Chasing publicity for a schedule made up almost entirely of night games, the Bulldogs took the field in all-black uniforms with phosphorescent white skeletons painted across the front — meant to unnerve the opposition and give the crowd something to talk about. A wire photo of the team ran under the caption "Imagine Meeting Them At Night." No club before or since has worn anything quite like it. The football was better than the business. Cleveland finished 7–1–1 against the likes of the Columbus All-Stars, the Jamestown Liberties, the Dayton Kesslers and the Nashville-based National Elites — good teams a rung below the country's top professional circuit. The gate never followed. Their opening night at the 78,000-seat Municipal Stadium drew a few hundred people, and the game was called off rather than played in an empty bowl; the rest of the season moved to the smaller confines of Luna Park. The skeletons made papers nationwide and sold almost no tickets, and the owner folded the team after its only season.
