Elymus virginicus- Virginia Wild Rye

Virginia Wild Rye is a cool-season grass, meaning it actively grows in the spring and fall when temperatures are lower and so will green up early in the growing season. In June, thin stalks rise above the narrow foliage and bear inconspicuous green blooms that become attractive, elongated seed heads, reminiscent of wheat. These add a lovely visual accent to the garden as they sway in the breeze and turn colors ranging from tan to gold to red in the fall. Provides a preferred nesting material for birds. Host plant for numerous species of skipper and satyrid. Provides excellent erosion control along slopes and banks. Readily self-seeds and so should be used with caution in highly manicured gardens.
