Wing Theory

Two abstract silver wings, matte-finished and effortlessly cool. The kind of earring a sculptor would wear — or anyone who likes their jewellery to feel like art. Born and raised in Toronto Canada, Jennifer Shigetomi (the creative force behind Matsu) initially pursued an education in fine arts at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Although the four years at OCAD fueled her artistic drive, she realized she had a technical side that needed an outlet. After exploring evening courses in wax carving for jewellery, Jennifer discovered that she had found a medium which balanced her interests in both artistry and technique. She enrolled in the three year goldsmith program at George Brown College in Toronto. Alongside business partner and sister, Lisa, Matsu Jewellery set up their first studio/showroom in 1996. High demand and space issues prompted the sister team to relocate their working studio to their Toronto storefront location where they have operated Matsu since October 2004.
