ESP Custom Lab is the R&D division of ESP Guitars Japan, responsible for the components developed for the Custom Shop instruments in Tokyo. The Tone Spring starts from a straightforward mechanical observation: in a floating tremolo, the springs are an integral part of the resonant system. Their mass, stiffness and number all influence how vibrations are transmitted between the tremolo block and the body. The TYPE-2 features a larger wire diameter and a larger outer coil diameter than the TYPE-1. Tension is slightly higher. ESP Custom Lab worked on the compliance of the material to allow additional springs to be installed without the usual problems: floating lockup, or springs popping off during upward bends. These are real mechanical issues, and the TYPE-2 addresses them in a documented way. It is used with 4 or 5 springs in a standard setup, alone or combined with TYPE-1 or existing springs to fine-tune overall tension and arm feel. Compatible with both floating and non-floating tremolo configurations. The swap is straightforward: replace springs one at a time after loosening the strings, being careful with the sharp ends. A concrete mechanical upgrade for guitarists looking to dial in their tremolo setup or fix unsatisfactory mechanical behavior. The tonal impact exists in theory, but remains subtle: ESP acknowledges this themselves. If what you need first and foremost is a compliant spring that holds the float correctly with multiple units installed, the TYPE-2 delivers on that reliably.
