1.75" Crazy Horse Triple Prong Buffalo Leather Belt – Gray
This 1.75-inch gray Crazy Horse triple-prong leather belt combines a wide three-prong buckle with one of the more distinctive leather finishes I work with. I make this belt in my Colorado Springs workshop from one solid piece of full-grain buffalo leather with a Crazy Horse oil-and-wax pull-up finish. The gray color develops lighter and darker areas as the leather bends, rubs and ages, giving each belt its own character. The wide buckle uses three individual prongs that engage three rows of fitting holes across the belt. This style is also commonly called a 3-prong belt or three-prong leather belt. What Makes Gray Crazy Horse Leather Different? Crazy Horse leather gets its distinctive appearance from oils and waxes worked into the leather. When the leather flexes or is rubbed, those oils and waxes move within the hide and create what is known as a pull-up effect. On gray leather, that effect can be especially noticeable. Areas that bend around the buckle, pass through belt loops or receive regular contact may become lighter or darker than the surrounding leather. That means this is not a perfectly uniform gray belt, and it is not intended to be. The color variation, surface marks and changing tones are part of the Crazy Horse finish. Two belts cut from the same hide can have slightly different grain, shading and pull-up. Those differences are normal characteristics of full-grain leather rather than defects. The name refers to the style of finish rather than the animal the leather came from. This belt is made from full-grain buffalo leather. The pull-up finish is meant to respond to use. Bends, surface marks and rubbing can temporarily change the color of the leather. Some marks can be softened simply by rubbing the area with your fingers or a clean cloth, which redistributes some of the oils and waxes. Over time, those changes begin to blend together into the patina of the belt. If you like leather that develops its own appearance rather than remaining perfectly uniform, Crazy Horse is an excellent choice. To learn more about choosing this type of leather, take a look at my Crazy Horse Leather Belt Buying Guide . Why Choose a Gray Leather Belt? Gray gives this belt a different look from the traditional black and brown leather belts most men own. It still has a rugged, neutral appearance, but the Crazy Horse pull-up adds tonal variation that keeps the leather from looking flat or overly finished. Because the color naturally changes across the surface, the belt takes on more depth as it is worn. Areas receiving the most use usually develop character first, especially near the buckle, fitting holes and belt loops. Why Choose a Triple-Prong Belt? A triple-prong buckle works particularly well on a wide belt. Instead of one prong engaging one fitting hole, three individual prongs engage three aligned rows of holes across the leather. On this 1.75-inch strap, the wide buckle looks proportional to the leather and gives the belt its distinctive, substantial appearance. This style is a good choice for: Jeans and heavy denim Work pants Utility and trade use Boots and rugged casual clothing Anyone who prefers a wider, more substantial leather belt For more about this style, read Why You Should Own a Triple-Prong Leather Belt . One Solid Piece of Full-Grain Buffalo Leather I make this belt from one solid piece of full-grain buffalo leather. There is no bonded leather core, synthetic filler or manmade material hidden between layers. Full-grain leather retains the natural grain structure of the hide. Grain patterns, texture and small variations will therefore differ somewhat from belt to belt. Combined with the Crazy Horse finish, those natural variations make every belt a little different. A True 1.75-Inch Wide Leather Belt At 1.75 inches wide, this belt is noticeably wider than a typical 1.5-inch casual belt. That extra width is an important part of the look and feel of a triple-prong belt, but it also means you should check the belt loops on the pants you intend to wear. Jeans and work pants usually accommodate wider belts better than dress pants, although loop sizes vary by manufacturer. If you are deciding between belt widths, my Men’s Belt Width Guide explains the differences between 1.25-inch, 1.5-inch and 1.75-inch belts. Expect Gray Crazy Horse Leather to Change If you are buying Crazy Horse leather for the first time, this is probably the most important thing to understand: the appearance will change as you wear it. Bending the strap can create lighter areas. Friction from belt loops can change the surface. The buckle and fitting-hole areas will develop wear before sections of the belt that receive less contact. With gray Crazy Horse leather, those changes can produce a range of lighter and darker gray tones across the same belt. That changing appearance is part of the reason people choose this leather in the first place. Handmade in Colorado Springs I make this belt in my Colorado Springs workshop. I prepare the leather, punch the three rows of fitting holes, install the hardware, assemble the belt and finish it for wear. I've been selling leather belts since 2002, and my approach is straightforward: start with good leather, use hardware appropriate for the belt, and make something designed to actually be worn. How to Order the Correct Belt Size Do not order your pants size. The most accurate way to determine your belt size is to measure a belt you already wear. Lay your current belt flat. Measure from the beginning of the leather at the buckle fold to the fitting hole you use most often. Do not include the buckle itself in the measurement. That measurement is the size you should order. If your measurement is an odd number, round up to the next even size. For example, if your belt measures 37 inches, order a size 38. If it measures 40 inches, order a size 40. Please review the sizing illustration in the product photos and my complete Belt Size & Measuring Guide before ordering. Sized to the Center Hole Your ordered size falls on the center fitting position, giving you adjustment room in both directions. Caring for Gray Crazy Horse Leather Crazy Horse leather already contains oils and waxes, so it generally does not need frequent conditioning. Wipe away ordinary dirt with a clean cloth, allow the belt to dry naturally if it becomes wet, and condition it when the leather actually begins to feel dry rather than automatically treating it on a schedule. Keep in mind that applying conditioner can temporarily darken gray Crazy Horse leather or alter the appearance of the pull-up. Use a small amount and test an inconspicuous area first. Avoid soaking the leather or drying it with direct heat. No Two Gray Crazy Horse Belts Will Look Exactly Alike The natural grain of full-grain buffalo leather combined with the Crazy Horse pull-up finish creates variation from belt to belt. If you like leather that develops lighter and darker tones, surface character and patina as you wear it, gray Crazy Horse is a particularly distinctive choice.
