"Suji Shibori" Vintage Juban Underkimono
This listing is for a traditional underkimono (juban in Japanese) designed to be worn beneath a woman's kimono. Like flowers caught in a burst of sunlight, bold red blossoms radiate across a soft cream background in a wonderfully graphic shibori design. Fine kanoko (fawn spot) shibori details the flower centers as long, flowing suji shibori lines streak outward across the silk, giving the pattern its energetic, almost hand-drawn quality. Suji shibori, meaning "stripe shibori," uses folding, pleating, and binding to create distinctive linear patterns with the softly irregular edges characteristic of hand-dyed resist work. There are signs of age, with a couple light blemishes on the front, see last photos. Underkimono make wonderful robes because they are cut shorter than outer kimono, so they do not have the extra length that is typically folded at the waist for traditional dressing. The lighter weight and streamlined shape make them easy to slip on and wear without added bulk. Perfect for the beach, poolside lounging, summer cover ups, or effortless layering at home or out and about. The belt is not included, but if you'd like to wear or display this kimono with a traditional obi, browse our selection of OBI BELTS. Although it isn't traditional, if you'd like one of our simple cotton sashes to wear with this, we'll choose a complimenting color (see Add a Sash? above). See the videos below to learn how to dress in kimono.
