Dating back to a vibrant period of early regional rule in ancient India, the diminutive 1/8 Kakani bronze coin issued by the Naga Dynasty of Narwar (circa 200–340 AD) provides a tangible window into the economy of central India following the decline of the Kushan Empire. Ruling over territories that stretched across the Malwa Plateau—including Padmavati, Kantipuri, and Vidisha—the Nagas issued these incredibly small, crude, and non-uniform fractional coins to facilitate everyday local commerce during a time when global trade in spices and textiles flourished. The obverse typically features a stylized humped bull (Vrisha), a prominent cultural and religious symbol of power and fertility, while the reverse displays an early Brahmi script legend often bearing the name of the issuing ruler, such as Maharaja Sri Ganendra for King Ganapati Naga.
