Term 4 2026 | Portraiture Mixed Tape with Various Artists (SAT PM)

Lecturers: Thomas Readett, Cassie Thring, Christopher Orchard, Daryl Austin, Zoe Freney and Amy Sibenaler Sat 26 Sep – Sat 7 Nov (excluding 3 Oct long weekend) 1.30pm – 4.30pm Level – Advanced Age – 16+ This is an adult class and is not suitable for students under 16 years of age. Students under 18, must obtain parental or guardian consent and submit a completed consent form before the class commences. Experience diverse approaches to portraiture with a different guest artist/lecturer each week. During this dynamic six-week course, each guest artist will guide you through their distinct techniques and share perspectives related to their artistic practice. This course will expose students to a diverse selection of approaches to portraiture while working from a model. This course is suited to students with prior drawing experience. It will inspire and challenge you, whether you’re looking to refine your skills or discover new ways of seeing. Week 1 – Sat 26 Sep with Thomas Readett Materials required: 5 x sheets of butchers paper A1 2 x sheets of cartridge A1 1 x sheet of black paper A1 (or A3 if A1 is not an option) Willow charcoal Putty Eraser White conte’ Thomas Readett is an Established Artist and a Ngarrindjeri man who was born and raised on Kaurna Country (Adelaide, SA) where he continues to practice and live. Thomas’ practice spans drawing, painting ,video, music, advocacy and education. Thomas graduated at Adelaide Central School of Art, completing his Associate Degree and Bachelor of Visual Arts Degree (BVA) in 2015. He has since exhibited solo shows with works developed through studio practice and artist residency programs such as the SALA Country Health SA/University of South Australia Glenside Mental Health residency. Thomas is a Portrait Artist of the Year Season 2 Contestant. trvisualarts.com Week 2 – Sat 10 Oct with Cassie Thring With artist Cassie Thring this weeks workshop will explore how the use of simple gestural line can build an emotive and compelling portrait. Materials required: Please bring along a range of pencils, graphite and colour and a selection of papers. Cassie Thring is a multidisciplinary artist working from Floating Goose Studios on Kaurna land, Adelaide, SA. Her work reflects an interest in the riches and sorrows of life, in an earnest search for the meaning behind the uncertainties of life’s adventures. Working across sculpture, painting, printmaking and installation, Thring’s work attempts to untangle such mysteries with a combination of humour and tragedy. She has a genuine determination to play with ideas and ways of making, becoming both maker and explorer. A passionate advocate for accessible art programs in ageing, indigenous and youth communities, Thring has participated in local and international residencies, is the recipient of several grants and has been a finalist in The Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize in 2018. Thring’s work is held in the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Museum of Canberra and private collections, both in Australia and internationally cassiethring.com Week 3 – Sat 17 Oct with Christopher Orchard Portrait as Avatar, truth / fiction Materials required: 6 sheets of BULKY NEWSPRINT, NOT butchers paper. 2 sheets of CA Grain Cartridge 210 gsm, NOT school cartridge. 1 box of natural charcoal. ”Thick Sticks” 1 medium charcoal pencil. A White latex eraser. A rag ,napkin size, e.g. old bed sheet or T-shirt material that has been washed many times. Masking tape. Christopher Orchard is one of the leading exponents of the drawn image in Australia and is well recognised by his peers in Australia, Europe and the United States. Much loved by the many students who have been privileged to have him as a teacher at the Adelaide Central School of Art, Christopher was awarded an Arts SA Fellowship to exhibit in New York in 2011. Christopher regularly exhibits with BMGArt, Adelaide and has work held by the Art Gallery of South Australia, Artbank, Government House (SA), The British Petroleum Collection (London), Kedumba Drawing Collection (NSW), FH Fauldings and numerous private collections locally and internationally. Christopherorchardartist.com.au Week 4 – Sat 24 Oct with Daryl Austin Daryl Austin is an artist and lecturer, who has taught painting at Adelaide Central School of Art since 2001. His work hovers between realism and abstraction, exploring states of visual flux.Daryl studied a BA in Visual Arts at the University of South Australia 1983 – 1986. He was included in the 2nd Adelaide Biennial at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1992. Daryl’s talent has been recognised by numerous awards, such as the EVA Award, Adelaide (1993), Kernewek Lowender Art Prize (1993), Winner Santos Whyalla Art Prize (1997), Winner City of Whyalla Art Prize [2002], University of Adelaide – Vice Chancellor Portrait Commission [2003) and Parliament of South Australia – President of Legislative Council Portrait commission (2005). Daryl’s work is collected by the Art Gallery of South Australia, the University of Adelaide and Legislative Council, Parliament of South Australia in addition to several corporate collections in Australia. darylaustin.com Week 5 – Sat 31 Oct with Zoe Freney Learn to draw narrative portraits in soft pastel with Zoe Freney. Zoe draws herself and members of her family in order to create stories about everyday life, identity and relationships. Materials required: charcoal pencileraser, soft pastels (portrait colours) 4 or 5 pieces of pastel paper like Canson Mi-Teintes or a primed pastel paper like Art Spectrum Colourfix in a mid tone. Zoe Freney is an artist and academic based on Kaurna Country, Adelaide. She teaches Art History & Theory at Adelaide Central School of Art, where she is Coordinator BVA and BVA (Honours). Zoe recently completed a PhD program at the Australian National University, where her project explored depictions of mothers and mothering from a matricentric feminist standpoint. Zoe’s artwork explores issues of contemporary mothering and the creative potential of the domestic space. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and prizes locally and internationally. zoefreney.com Week 6 – Sat 7 Nov with Amy Sibenaler This workshop explores portraiture with the use of charcoal and coloured pencils. Through direct observation, participants will explore face structure, tone, and light to develop a deeper understanding of composing a portrait and personal interpretation. Materials Charcoal (willow and compressed) Colour pencils Sharpener Rag, or shammy Eraser Good quality paper (250 gsm A1 pad or 5 x single sheets) is an emerging Australian visual artist working in the field of figurative painting and drawing. She received a Bachelor of Visual Art from Adelaide Central School of Art in 2025. Amy has studied internationally at the New York Studio School, Sibenalers’ work is grounded in the everyday, exploring the transformative potential the ordinary can offer. Centered on the figure and personal relationships, Sibenaler’s work offers connection through personal experience, struggle and her role as an artist’s mother. Sibenaler’s process involves constant shifts in drawing, erasing, applying paint, scraping back, layering and starting again, mirroring the rhythm of daily life. Aimed at capturing a felt moment or sensation remaining from a certain encounter. Each work is unique and invested with time, care and skill. Sibenaler has exhibited nationally and within South Australia. Her drawings and paintings have been finalists in the 24th Dobell Drawing Prize, The Prospect Portrait Prize, Gallery M Contemporary Art Prize and Gallery One Smallacombe Portrait Prize.
