In 1977, botanists Tsiang & Li considered Hoya yuennanensis to be a synonym of Hoya lyi. However, in 2012, Hoya taxonomist Michele Rodda reexamined the species and concluded that Hoya yuennanensis and Hoya lyi are distinct species with clear morphological differences.
