The plant pictured here is the exact plant being sold Hoya yuennanensis was first collected in 1915, though it was not formally described and published until 1936. In 1977, botanists Tsiang & Li considered Hoya yuennanensis to be a synonym of Hoya lyi. However, in 2012, Hoya taxonomist Michele Rodda reexamined the species and concluded that Hoya yuennanensis and Hoya lyi are distinct species with clear morphological differences.
