Mature males develop deep red flanks overlaid with iridescent blue speckling and carry extended, filamentous rays on the dorsal and caudal fins, making a well-conditioned male one of the true showpieces among dwarf cichlids. Males can be more assertive toward conspecifics and tankmates than some of the milder Apistogramma species, so provide plenty of sight-breaks with plants, driftwood, and leaf litter. The female takes on essentially all parental duties, guarding the eggs and fry aggressively while her body darkens and takes on a warning coloration. Coconut caves, clay pots, or driftwood crevices all make suitable spawning sites.
