Modified 1795 Pattern .69 Caliber Socket Bayonet An original Model 1795 .69 caliber socket bayonet exhibiting a fascinating period modification that dramatically distinguishes it from standard examples. Originally manufactured for the U.S. Model 1795 musket, this bayonet was shortened during its period of service, creating a unique and uncommon variation likely adapted for specialized military or regimental use. The steel has developed a rich deep dark brown, nearly black patina with the appearance of hand-forged iron, giving the bayonet exceptional eye appeal. The triangular blade was shortened long ago to a length of approximately 6½ inches, with the alteration exhibiting considerable age and wear consistent with a period modification rather than a modern alteration. The flat of the blade is stamped “No. 837” along with several faint, now largely illegible, inspector’s marks. The socket features open-ended locking slots and is additionally stamped “GS 20.” The base of the blade retains its distinctive angular shoulders, an important characteristic of early socket bayonet construction. Shortened military bayonets are encountered far less frequently than standard examples, particularly those exhibiting clear evidence of period use and regimental markings. Whether altered for artillery, naval, militia, or other specialized service, this example represents an intriguing and historically significant adaptation of an early American military arm. An outstanding conversation piece and a desirable addition to any collection of early American military arms, War of 1812 artifacts, or U.S. socket bayonets.
