I have always been interested in art, even as a small child. I would watch my mother carving puṉu and learnt from her how to carve wood, clean and hot-wire it. We didn’t paint the puṉu. It was all hot-wired. As an adult I worked in many places, cleaning. When it came time to stop work, I went to the art centre to look and see what I could do. I started with dots then emus and landscape. I had many pictures in my head. I started painting flowers, wildflowers from the desert. Then James [Drinkwater] and Lottie [Consalvo] came to Titjikala. He spoke to me about my art and showed me some different ways to make marks. This brightened up my paintings, loosened them up. He taught me to put down thick paint for the landscape, saltpans and wildflowers. Painting relaxes me. I don’t mind people watching me or asking questions. I like to meet people who are interested in art and my artwork. NITA FERGUSON
