Antique Joseon Dynasty Korean Bandaji Rare Small Scale
This exceptional Chosun (Joseon) period Korean Bandaji (half-closing blanket chest) stands out for its unusually compact, rare small-scale dimensions. The front face is masterfully crafted from solid Chestnut wood (Bam-namu), selected for its dense, durable grain, while the framing case is constructed from lightweight, moisture-regulating Cryptomeria wood (Sam-namu). The piece is heavily embellished with traditional hand-forged iron plates, corner mounts, and structural hardware. The front-facing plate features an interlocking geometry pattern flanked by classic drop-ring handles and an external iron locking latch. Interior Details & Design Analysis: Opening the downward-hinged top panel reveals a stunning, historically preserved hand-blocked geometric paper lining featuring stylized floral emblems and auspicious medallion patterns. This decorative lining acted as a protective barrier to shield delicate textiles from splinters and environmental humidity. It most likely functioned as A Child’s Room Chest (Moris-jang or Small Bedding Chest): Scale-accurate miniature furniture was intentionally crafted for children’s quarters within upper-class Joseon households to store scaled-down youth blankets, seasonal clothing, or personal study items. Age: 19th C Dimensions: 29 1/2″ High by 12 3/8″ Deep by 21 1/4″ High
