Native American Female Crow Rock Medicine Bundle

Native American Crow rock medicine bundle historically crafted during the late 19th century. The Sacred Stone: According to Apsáalooke (Crow) tradition, unique stones or fossils discovered on the earth are considered sacred if they reveal themselves in a dream or vision. This specific artifact represents a female rock medicine, categorized by its distinctive smooth, egg-like pebble shape. The core stone is carefully encased in soft, wrapped buckskin or deerskin, gathered tightly at the top with a matching hide tie strap used for wearing or carrying the bundle. The bundle is adorned with vibrant glass trade beads—including dark blue, light blue, red, and black—individually sewn around the leather casing. In Crow culture, bundles decorated primarily with glass beads were traditionally kept by families to invoke spiritual protection, good luck, and health. To the Crows, any particularly shaped rock or a fossil found on the surface of the earth was sacred, but only one appearing in a dream or a vision became “medicine”. Rock medicines are divided into male and female. Female “rocks” are egg-shaped pebbles, gatrolites or fosiilized ammonites. Male “rocks” are often fossilized section of baculites, an extinct shelled mollusk, or rocks with somewhat sharp, pointed edges.
