Antique Japanese Kannon Biraki Kimono Chest - Paulownia | Meiji, Late 19th Century

An antique Japanese kannon biraki, a two-section kimono storage chest with a doored upper section. Made from kiri (paulownia) with iron hardware. Meiji period, late 19th century.The upper doors are held by a large round lockplate, with heavy iron strapping spread across both, and open onto two full-width drawers. Below, a full-width drawer sits above a narrower drawer and a small door, each with its own round lockplate. Iron carrying handles are set into the sides of both sections.
