Here is a matched set of two large nautilus shell cabochons. Nautilus shell is composed of layers of different colors. In these nautilus shell cabs, one part of the shell is polished down to the innermost layer, which is a naturally pearlescent blue-gray. The other part of the shell is polished down to the white middle layer, which shows off a beautiful rainbow iridescence. To form the cab, the nautilus shell is cut in half down the long axis, filled with resin and capped with mother of pearl, or other shell material, to form the flat back.
