Nothing connects us to nature and our materials like growing and tending the plants that give us such wonderful gifts. Plants will indeed communicate with us, and there is truth in the concept of plant allies. However, we must initiate and establish a giving, nurturing, and mutually reciprocal relationship with them first. Germinating and growing a plant and tending to its needs is a wonderful way to strike up an enduring, meaningful, and mutually beneficial relationship. My hope is that by spreading the seeds of these plants, someone will find ideal growing conditions, learn how to cultivate them commercially and relieve some of the stress on the wild populations that we are overharvesting. Ammoniacum Ammoniacum tears are collected from the plant Dorema Ammoniacum (Synonymous with Ferula ammoniacum). It is an aromatic resin named for its long association with the Oracle of the Temple of Ammon. Originally located in Siwa Libya, the temple was an important religious center for the Egyptians and the ancient Greeks, Believed to be the preferred incense to petition the oracle for answers, Gum Ammoniacum is thought to have served the same purpose at the Greek oracle at Delphi. The name has persisted even though the oracles are no longer used as they once were. Also known as Oshek or Veshek, Ammoniacum is still burned in the Moroccan Jewish tradition before the holy scrolls are removed from the temple ark and in other North African and Arabian cultures.. This resin has a lovely “green” fragrance, similar to, but softer and sweeter than that of its cousin, Galbanum, which is used in perfumery. Galbanum has a very dry green scent, and Ammoniacum has a fragrance that could be described as golden green, fresh, penetrating and nourishing. It tastes bitter and pungent, though this might be due to its high essential oil content. Ammoniacum has been used since antiquity for its medicinal and therapeutic properties. I cannot list them here, so I encourage you to do your research. Energetically, the Ferula family is ruled by the wind. This is not only indicated by how they address flatulence but because they all seem to be connected with the function of communication from an oracular and divinatory perspective, opening gateways in perception and traditionally used when working with or petitioning the Djinn. One could classify them under the rule of Mercury. Ammoniacum seeds, leaves and roots have traditional culinary and medicinal applications. Its unique fragrance profile could provide an exciting addition to the perfumer's palette as a tincture or essential oil. How to germinate Galbanum seeds Biologist Lennard Pisa has been experimenting with growing plants from these seeds. His suggestion is- "Chill for 3 to 6 weeks at 5°c. Ferula Asafoetida, Gummosa, and Foetida take an average of a month to germinate; Dorema takes longer. Not all seeds sprout at the same time; some take 3 weeks, and some take 5. Ferula is close to Angelica taxonomically. Technically, it is a monocarpic perennial; the plants live for 3-5 years and then flower, after which they die." The nominal temperature of most domestic refrigerators is 5 degrees Celsius.Which makes them perfect for seed stratification. After stratification, plant your seeds in deep pots or directly in the soil at a depth of 1 centimetre and water them in. Galbanum seeds send down long tap roots, so if first sowing them in pots, make sure the roots have enough room to develop and won't be disturbed too much when planting out.
