D38 Trundling Turk Armchair

The D38 “Trundling Turk” Armchair was created in 1953. It is a collection of upholstery on wheels, the context of which Peter Smithson described in 1998 as follows: “One can observe that student life is largely led on the floor. Bed, books, conversations, even cooking, but definitely food, all find space there. Users and owners should appropriate the furniture, not adapt to it.” Trundling Turk was designed by Alison and Peter Smithson. In 1950, the married couple, founded their architectural firm APS in London, which they ran together until Alison Smithson's death in 1993. Smithson's last major work, after the death of his wife, were the designs for the new building of the Kragstuhlmuseum/TECTA archive in Lauenförde, whose inauguration in 2003 he did not live to see.
