Foundations of Rapier: the mechanics of Ridolfo Capoferro (19th and 27th September)
Advanced techniques are basic techniques done really, really, well. Ridolfo Capoferro’s Gran Simulacro (1610) is one of the greatest rapier treatises ever written. It provides a wealth of detail about how to move to strike without being struck. In this live online workshop we’ll build those mechanics from the ground up. Dates: Saturday September 19th, 7pm UK time Sunday September 27th, 8am UK time Beginning with guard position, footwork, and grip, we’ll work through the fundamental actions that make Capoferro’s system work: lunging, passing, changing hand positions, striking with the point, using cuts correctly, and applying the distinctive body mechanics that make his fencing so efficient. Capoferro’s mechanics are physically challenging for most people, so we will focus on working our way towards perfection. You can and should take the classes at your own pace. No partner is required. Everything can be practised solo, making this an ideal introduction to rapier for complete beginners, while also giving experienced fencers a chance to refine the foundations of their practice. During the webinars we’ll cover Who Ridolfo Capoferro was, and why his work still matters Drawing the sword How to establish a stable, effective guard position Holding the rapier correctly The mechanics of the lunge Stepping and passing The guards of prima, seconda, terza and quarta Thrusting in every hand position The mechancis of cutting with the rapier The mechanical differences between attacks on the inside and outside lines Capoferro’s famous “Secure Way to Defend Yourself Against Any Sort of Blow” We’ll finish with a live Q&A where you can ask questions about the material or about rapier fencing more generally. There are no silly questions! You're welcome to email Guy with questions before the webinar, or use the chat. Attendees' video feed is not recorded. What you’ll need A training rapier if you have one (or any practice sword) If you don’t have a sword, a stick will do. It should be about 120cm (4 feet) long If possible, a longer stick about 6 feet (180 cm) long for some of the body mechanics exercises. This is optional. No fencing partner is required. Your registration includes: Access to both live sessions Recordings of both webinars The illustrated workbook, including extracts and plates from Capoferro’s Gran Simulacro Lifetime access to the recordings, which you can download. Whether you’re completely new to rapier or looking to improve the quality of your existing fencing, this class will give you practical tools you can begin using immediately.
