Swiss chard (Bietola a costa argentata) seeds produce large, glossy green leaves on thick silver-white stems. Chard is a generous, cut-and-come-again leafy vegetable that tolerates UAE conditions better than most leafy greens. Best sowing time in the UAE: September to March Sowing: 1–2 cm deep, 20–25 cm apart Light: full sun to part shade Water: regular watering; mulch to keep roots cool Harvest: pick outer leaves from about 8 weeks and let the centre keep growing Use leaves like spinach and stems like celery.
