The men's chambray shirt, US Navy construction In the early 20th century, chambray dressed American workwear and navy uniforms. It differs from denim by its plain weave: an indigo-dyed warp thread crossed with a light weft, made to resist and breathe in hot environments. This men's chambray shirt takes up the construction of the naval shirts of the 1940s and 1950s: two chest pockets, a classic collar, a double-thickness button placket. At this weight, the cloth gains density: it limits creasing and holds the silhouette all day, without stiffness. Its surface is slubbed and slightly irregular, and the indigo, carried by the warp thread, evolves with washing to create a patina specific to each wearer. The shirt is pre-washed, to stabilise its dimensions and soften the material a little. Cat's-eye buttons The buttons are four-hole cat's-eye type, navy blue, tone on tone. The button placket is made in double thickness, with white topstitching that stands out against the indigo. These are military shirt details, chosen to withstand repeated buttoning. Chain-stitched yoke, swallowtail vents The front is assembled with a chain-stitch yoke, supple, as on US Navy shirts. On the sides, swallowtail vents set on an off-the-arm machine follow the movement. The cut, though, is contemporary: sharp shoulders, controlled length, no excess volume at the back or on the sides. The shirt is made in Morocco. Cut and sizing Fitted cut, with about 6 cm (2.4 in) of ease around the chest. From S to XXL, half chest runs from 51 to 59 cm (20 to 23.2 in), front length from 71 to 77.5 cm (28 to 30.5 in) and sleeve from 63 to 66 cm (24.8 to 26 in); it also comes in XS and 3XL. Take your usual size; if you have broad shoulders, take the size above to avoid any tension on the front. To measure your half chest, run the tape under the armpits and divide by two. How to wear an indigo chambray shirt Tucked in or loose, the length allows it. On its own, sleeves rolled up, with a beige chino. Under an open sand moleskin jacket. With ecru jeans, so the indigo stands out. Care Wash it as rarely as possible. When needed: 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent, separately the first few times, because indigo bleeds. No tumble dryer: air dry in the shade.
