Two compressor stages and an electric furnace to share the winter of a large houseThe ADD-ON system adds a heat pump to an existing electric furnace: a coil is installed on the furnace and the outdoor unit heats and cools through the same ducts. The furnace's electric elements are only used as backup. The Central Heat Pump ADD-ON ARCOAIRE H4H7T ION 2 stages | 5 Tons - 60,000 BTU (Coil EVD4X 24.5 in.) - R410A pairs the H4H7T60AKAAA outdoor unit with the EVD4X60M24A coil. Its ratings are 14.3 SEER2, 10.5 EER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.In a large house, winter is not handled by a single heat source. This pairing combines a two-stage compressor with the electric furnace already in place, with capacities published in the AHRI certification directory. This page shows how these three levels of response share the season, and what the certificate's figures let us set up in your home. The 5-ton size: which home it suitsThe 5-ton size is the largest common residential size. It suits a very large house on two or three levels, a heavily glazed house facing south or west, or an extended house whose duct system serves many rooms, in Laval as on the North Shore. These examples are only a guide: insulation, sun exposure and airtightness change the actual load considerably. In an ADD-ON, we size the heat pump on the cooling load, established by a room-by-room load calculation, since the furnace's electric elements cover the deep cold. If the calculation ends up at a smaller size, we tell you: an oversized unit cools in short cycles and dries the air poorly. What the certificate showsAt -8 °C (17 °F): 36,200 BTU/h.At -15 °C (5 °F): 28,800 BTU/h, with a COP of 1.98.The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published. These figures come from certificate AHRI 213677793, as published in the AHRI certification directory. Why capacity drops as the cold deepensA heat pump captures the heat contained in the outdoor air. The colder that air, the less heat there is to capture, and the harder the compressor must work to bring it up to the house. For this system of 60,000 BTU nominal, the published capacity represents about 60% of the size at -8 °C and about 48% at -15 °C.Meanwhile, the house loses more and more heat as the outdoor temperature falls. The two curves cross at a temperature specific to each house, the balance point. We estimate it from your load calculation and the certified capacities, then set the thermostat accordingly.A winter in three modesIn mild weather, the compressor runs on its reduced stage: cycles are long and the temperature stays even from one room to the next. When the cold sets in, it moves to its full stage. Below the balance point, the thermostat brings in the electric elements of the furnace as auxiliary heat, alongside the heat pump; on the coldest days, they carry most of the heating. The auxiliary heat threshold takes into account the house and your preferences; we set it at commissioning and show you how to change it. The heat pump's air is less hot than the air from the electric elements, and its cycles are longer: this is normal. During defrost, a plume of vapour comes out of the outdoor unit, and the furnace's elements may come on briefly so that the air at the registers stays warm. The seasonal ratings, plainlySEER2 at 14.3 measures cooling efficiency over a typical summer, and EER2 at 10.5 the efficiency at full load on a hot day. HSPF2 at 7.5 measures heating efficiency over a full season. The COP gives the efficiency at a specific temperature. An electric baseboard has a COP of 1: it delivers the energy it consumes, no more. At -15 °C, this system shows a COP of 1.98: at that test point, it delivers nearly twice the heat it consumes in electricity. These ratings are established under standardized test conditions; in your home, airflow and maintenance affect what the system actually delivers. The time-delay relay (TDR)These ratings are certified with the manufacturer's time-delay relay (TDR); we install it with the coil. This relay briefly keeps the blower running after the compressor stops, to make use of the cooling left in the coil. Without it, the installation would not quite match the certified configuration. The furnace blower and the 24.5 in. coilIn an ADD-ON, the furnace blower moves the air through the coil. At this size, it must deliver a large airflow; the furnace documentation states the maximum cooling capacity its blower can serve, and we check it on your model. A blower that is too weak would leave the coil starved of air and deliver less capacity than the certificate shows. The EVD4X60M24A coil is a 24.5 in. format, designed for the wide cabinets of high-capacity furnaces. It must match the width of the cabinet, with a sealed sheet-metal transition when needed, and it fits between the air outlet and the plenum.Summer in a large houseIn summer, the coil cools the air and removes humidity, which drains through the condensate line to the floor drain or a pump. The compressor's reduced stage suits hot, humid days well: it runs for a long time at low capacity, which gives the coil time to dry the air. During heat waves in Montreal, the full stage takes over. In a house on several levels, balancing the dampers helps the upper floor get its share of cool air.LogisVertThis pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.Installation on the existing furnaceThe coil sits on the furnace's air outlet, and a compatible thermostat decides when the heat pump heats alone and when the electric furnace takes over. We check the condition of the furnace, the airflow of its blower and the duct sizes before the quote. The outdoor unit goes on a stand, above the snow line, on a dedicated circuit. The outdoor unit, the line set and the electrical workAt this size, the outdoor unit is bulky. It sits on a sturdy stand, out of roof drip and away from bedroom windows, according to your municipality's rules. The insulated refrigerant line set, with a diameter suited to this pairing, is brazed under nitrogen, pressure-tested and evacuated, then the R-410A charge is adjusted at commissioning. Before the quote, we check the capacity of the electrical panel, which already feeds the electric furnace; the connection includes a dedicated circuit, an outdoor disconnect and control wiring to the furnace and thermostat.Commissioning ends with a test of each mode: cooling, heat pump heating on both stages, auxiliary heat from the furnace's elements and defrost.MaintenanceReplace the system filter according to its format, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, condensate drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost is normal. At this size, a large volume of air passes through the filter and the coil: a clogged filter quickly costs part of the certified capacity. Check it every month for the first few seasons. The electric furnace keeps its usual maintenance, centred on the blower, the heating elements and their connections.AirGreen, for the life of the installationA family business active for more than fifteen years in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, we hold RBQ licences for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work and carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance.
