A two-stage ADD-ON, with certified ratings for this pairingThe ADD-ON system adds a heat pump to an existing electric furnace: a coil is installed on the furnace and the outdoor unit heats and cools through the same ducts. The furnace's electric elements are only used as backup. The Central Heat Pump ADD-ON ARCOAIRE H4H7T ION 2 stages | 4 Tons - 48,000 BTU (Coil EVD4X 24.5 in.) - R410A pairs the H4H7T48AKAAA outdoor unit with the EVD4X48M24A coil. Its ratings are 14.5 SEER2, 10.5 EER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.This pairing is listed with its ratings in the AHRI certification directory. You therefore know, even before the visit, what the system delivers in winter and summer under standardized test conditions. This page explains those figures and what they mean for the electric furnace that stays in place. What the certificate showsAt -8 °C (17 °F): 30,200 BTU/h.At -15 °C (5 °F): 24,200 BTU/h, with a COP of 2.18.The two points are measured separately; we report each one as published. These figures come from certificate AHRI 213675361, as published in the AHRI certification directory. The ratings in plain wordsSEER2 at 14.5 measures cooling efficiency over a typical summer: the higher it is, the less the cooling uses for the same comfort. EER2 at 10.5 measures that efficiency at full load, on a hot day. HSPF2 at 7.5 measures heating efficiency over a full season. The COP gives the efficiency at a specific temperature. An electric baseboard has a COP of 1: it delivers exactly the energy it consumes. At -15 °C, this system shows a COP of 2.18: at that test point, it delivers a little more than twice the heat it consumes in electricity. These ratings are established under standardized test conditions. In your home, the condition of the ducts, the airflow set on the furnace blower and maintenance affect what the system actually delivers; that is why we check the duct system before the quote and set the airflow at commissioning. What the two winter points mean for the electric furnaceThe system's nominal size is 48,000 BTU. At -8 °C, its published heating capacity represents about 63% of that size; at -15 °C, about 50%. Meanwhile, the house's heat loss rises as the outdoor air gets colder. There is therefore a temperature, specific to each house, below which the heat pump is no longer enough: the balance point.Above that point, the heat pump heats alone. Below it, the thermostat brings in the electric elements of the furnace as auxiliary heat, to supply what the heat pump no longer provides. We estimate that point from the house's load calculation and the certified capacities, then set the auxiliary heat threshold accordingly. The certificate's figures are therefore used directly to set up your system.A two-stage compressorThe H4H7T48AKAAA unit belongs to Arcoaire's ION 2 stages series and uses a two-stage compressor: a reduced stage when demand is low, a full stage when the house needs all of the capacity. In mild weather, the reduced stage lengthens cycles and keeps the temperature more even; when cold or heat intensifies, the full stage takes over. In an ADD-ON, the furnace's electric elements add a third level of response for the coldest days. The time-delay relay (TDR)These ratings are certified with the manufacturer's time-delay relay (TDR); we install it with the coil. This relay briefly keeps the blower running after the compressor stops, to make use of the cooling left in the coil. Without it, the installed system would not quite match the certified configuration. The 4-ton sizeThe 4-ton size is often found in a large two-level house with a finished basement, a heavily glazed house or an extended house in Longueuil or on the South Shore. These examples are only a guide: insulation, orientation and airtightness change the load, which we establish with a room-by-room load calculation. In an ADD-ON, we size the heat pump on cooling; the furnace's electric elements cover the deep cold. The EVD4X48M24A coil is a 24.5 in. format; it must match the width of the furnace cabinet, with a sealed sheet-metal transition when needed. The thermostat and electric backup, day to dayAt each call for heat, the thermostat decides whether to add backup from the electric elements, often with the help of an outdoor sensor. The auxiliary heat threshold takes into account the balance point and your preferences; we set it at commissioning and show you how to change it.The heat pump's air is less hot than the air from the electric elements and its cycles are longer: this is normal. During defrost, a plume of vapour comes out of the outdoor unit, and the furnace's elements may come on briefly so that the air at the registers stays warm.Summer: cooling and dehumidificationIn summer, the coil cools the air and removes humidity, which drains through the condensate line to the floor drain or a pump. The reduced stage of the two-stage compressor suits hot, humid days well: it runs for a long time at low capacity, which gives the coil time to dry the air. The whole house is cooled through the existing ducts.LogisVertThis pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.Installation on the existing furnaceThe coil sits on the furnace's air outlet, and a compatible thermostat decides when the heat pump heats alone and when the electric furnace takes over. We check the condition of the furnace, the airflow of its blower and the duct sizes before the quote. The outdoor unit goes on a stand, above the snow line, on a dedicated circuit. The steps on siteOn site, we install the coil and the time-delay relay on the furnace, connect the condensate drain, set the outdoor unit on its stand out of roof drip and away from bedroom windows, then route the insulated refrigerant line set to the coil. Next come the dedicated circuit, the outdoor disconnect, the control wiring and the heat pump thermostat. At commissioning: nitrogen pressure test, vacuum, adjustment of the R-410A charge, the airflow and the auxiliary heat threshold, then a test of each mode, from cooling to auxiliary heat from the furnace's elements.MaintenanceReplace the system filter according to its format, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, condensate drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost is normal.A dirty coil or a clogged filter moves the system away from the conditions under which its ratings were measured. Maintenance is precisely what keeps the certified efficiency in your home. The electric furnace keeps its usual maintenance, centred on the blower, the heating elements and their connections.AirGreen, for the life of the installationA family business active for more than fifteen years in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, we hold RBQ licences for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work and carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance.
