Gansu, circa 1920 This distinctive sideboard from Gansu dates from the early twentieth century and has been converted from a grain storage unit, with the doors added using what were once fixed frames in the front. Its richly textured blue and cream crackled finish has been newly applied and contrasts with darker areas and traces of red, framing two delicate paintings across the doors. Thick outer frames and a broad lower rail give definition to the simple front. Peonies decorate the left-hand pair of doors, with pink and red blooms, green foliage and small birds set against a pale background. Traditionally associated with wealth, prosperity and honour in Chinese culture, these flowers add an auspicious detail to the design. The right-hand painting shows lotus flowers above a pond, with two ducks swimming beneath, bringing a gentle balance to the floral scene. The addition of the doors while preserving the original paintings gives the unit a new purpose with added practicality, providing easy access to the generous cupboard space inside. Small metal drop handles complete the doors, and a shelf divides the interior for practical storage. Panelled sides and sturdy legs, including a central supporting foot, complete the balanced form. A lovely focal point for a dining room or living room, the sideboard combines useful storage with colourful painted detail. Its varied blue tones would work beautifully with more neutral colour schemes, bringing texture and interest to either a traditional or more modern interior.
