Small Planes' sourcing partnership with Long Miles Coffee Project (LMCP) dates back to 2018, our very first full year in operation. We purchased two lots from their 2018 Burundi harvest. Fast forward to now, LMCP's stellar coffees from the hills of Burundi have become a roastery staple and a core tenant on our menu. Kinyovu is comprised of micro-lots from the Kayanza and Muramyva provinces that were too small to be exported on their own. Instead, Long Miles carefully selects lots and blends them together to create a truly balanced and complex flavor profile. We taste big jammy notes and malic acidity. Founded on a farmer-driven production model, Long Miles invests in coffee growing communities and their future generations. The farmers they work with receive year-round support from a team of young Burundians called the Coffee Scouts, a group of roughly twenty-six junior agronomists who live in the hills where coffee is grown. There are many reasons to celebrate the work of Long Miles. One is the traceability of their microlots. Each hill represents a microclimate, most with ideal coffee-growing conditions including high elevation, nitrogen-rich volcanic soil, mild temperatures, and gentle rainfall. Long Miles Coffee Project (LMCP) was founded by Ben and Kristy Carlson in 2011 to ‘facilitate direct and meaningful relationships between coffee roasters and coffee growers by producing great coffee and telling the story of the farmers who grow it’.
