Winter Bee Starvation and Honey Accessibility in Cold Climate Beekeeping
Free Educational Beekeeping Resource Strong honey bee colonies can still starve with honey present in the hive. This free educational video and research summary examines observations from Northern Indiana related to winter cluster survival, prolonged cold confinement, food accessibility, honey architecture around the cluster, and late-winter starvation risk in cold climate beekeeping. Research Background The project originated as research into single brood chamber overwintering management in cold climates, but the findings revealed broader questions related to how honey placement around the winter cluster may influence colony survival. One of the central observations from this research was that colonies sometimes died tightly clustered on brood with honey still remaining elsewhere in the hive — occasionally only one frame away from the cluster. In many of the colonies examined: • Bees remained tightly clustered on brood • Worker bees displayed classic starvation positioning with heads deep inside cells • Honey remained present elsewhere in the hive but appeared inaccessible during prolonged cold weather Colonies in the project were managed using an integrated mite management approach that included formic acid, oxalic acid, thymol, and rotational treatment strategies. Key Observation Total hive honey reserves alone may not accurately predict winter survival. Honey accessibility to the winter cluster may be equally important. Topics Included • Winter cluster behavior • Starvation signs in honey bee colonies • Brood retention during cold confinement • Accessible vs. inaccessible honey stores • Integrated mite management observations • Practical considerations for northern beekeepers Educational Outreach Project This educational outreach project was funded in part through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program administered by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.
