Large American Rag Rug
Circa 1930-1950, upper Midwest, United States. A pale ground animated by irregular lines of color. Red, sable, tea green, sky, and shell, appear and dissolve across the surface. Scrap driven composition typical of domestic weaving, likely comprised of garments and household linens. Construction reflects the limitations of the domestic floor loom. Larger rugs were often woven in panels and joined after weaving. The center seam remains visible and original. Cotton rag weft on cotton warp with a flat, flexible structure. Thin and heavy. Honest wear consistent with age, a small immovable rust stain on one end.
