Weeping Peashrub Tree - Caragana
Weeping Peashrub (Caragana arborescens 'Pendula' or 'Walker') is a hardy, low-maintenance grafted tree perfect for Southwestern Ontario gardens. Thriving in USDA zones 2-7, it tolerates drought, full sun, and poor soil while resisting deer browse. Its graceful weeping form works beautifully as an accent, in rock gardens, or under power lines. Plant in well-drained soil with at least 6 hours of direct sun. Keep the graft union above soil level and space 4–6 feet apart. Water deeply 2–3 times weekly during the first season; once established, it needs water only during extended dry spells. Extremely hardy to –45°C, it requires no winter protection in Ontario. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring, removing dead or diseased branches and any straight shoots from the base. Thin the crown to prevent wind or snow damage. Apply mulch away from the trunk, and remove suckers promptly. Fertilizer is rarely needed. Avoid overwatering—poor drainage causes dieback. A resilient choice for challenging sites and low-maintenance landscapes.
