August Nerikomi Surface Lab: Color and Rhythm in Clay
This 4-week intermediate Nerikomi class focuses on advanced colored clay techniques, pattern development, and surface design. Students will explore different methods of coloring clay and constructing patterns through layering, slicing, stretching, and assembling clay forms. Emphasis will be placed on design principles, composition, repetition, and developing personal pattern language through experimentation and guided projects. Ideal for students with prior clay experience who want to deepen their technical and creative approach to Nerikomi. It is recommended that you are already comfortable working with basic hand-building techniques and have taken Introduction to Nerikomi – Pattern & Form. Location Still Life Ferndale 700 Livernois St., Ferndale, MI 48220 Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 pm Class Outline Each session focuses on a specific aspect: Week 1: Color & Pattern Foundations Week 2: Building Patterns Week 3: Applying Patterns to Form Week 4: Glazing & End of Class Discussion It is recommended that you are already comfortable working with basic hand-building techniques and have taken Introduction to Nerikomi – Pattern & Form. Everyone will be encouraged to have fun and enjoy this journey. About This Class To get the most out of this class, we recommend that you feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in Beginning Handbuilding and Introduction to Nerikomi – Pattern & Form Supplies needed for this class: • Cone 5-6 white clay body of your choosing (B-mix provided by studio) • Colored stains or Mason stains of your choosing • Our Signature All-Inclusive Pottery Tool Kit • X-Acto knife or precision carving tools • Thin wire cutter • Tenugui-size cotton cloth/fabric (13.5 x 35.5 inches) • Flexible ruler and sketchbook for pattern planning • Small plastic containers for colored slips Optional: • Colored pencils or markers for design sketches • Damp box for storing work-in-progress pieces • Small containers for organizing colored clay pieces SLS's recycled studio clay and bisque firing for up to 12 pieces are also included in the class. For non-members, glaze firing is included in the course fee. Additional clay is available for purchase at our Clay + Supply Shop as well. Cancellations made 4 or more days before the start of the class will be refunded. For cancellations made fewer than 4 full days, but more than 24 hours before the start time, a 50% refund or 50% credit toward another class or workshop will be issued. We cannot provide refunds or credits for cancellations or rescheduling requests made fewer than 24 hours before the start time of class, if you miss your class, or arrive too late to participate.
