Metallic Purple Hammer Coral

Hammer corals are a classic in the reef aquarium hobby, known for the gentle, swaying motion of their polyps. Belonging to the Fimbriaphyllia genus, these large polyp stony (LPS) corals offer a unique visual appeal, with fleshy tentacles that are tipped with hammer or anchor-shaped structures, creating a dynamic focal point in a well-maintained reef tank. This species typically forms a branching skeleton from which its colorful polyps extend. During the day, the polyps swell with water, displaying tentacles that move gracefully with the water current. While commonly seen in shades of green and brown, some specimens can exhibit more sought-after colorations, including gold and vibrant purple. The polyps retract at night or when disturbed, revealing the underlying calcareous skeleton. For successful husbandry, a Purple Hammer Coral requires stable water conditions. It prefers moderate lighting, with a PAR range between 75 and 150 being ideal. Place it in the lower to middle section of the tank on the rockwork where it will receive moderate, indirect water flow. Strong, direct flow can damage the polyps and prevent full extension. While photosynthetic, it benefits from occasional feedings of small meaty foods like mysis, brine shrimp, or specialized LPS pellets. Maintain calcium between 400-450 ppm, alkalinity at 8-12 dKH, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. Be sure to provide ample space, as its sweeper tentacles can extend several inches and will sting neighboring corals. The distinct shape and movement of the Hammer Coral make it a rewarding species for many reef keepers. It provides a type of motion and texture that contrasts beautifully with both soft corals and SPS, making it a valuable addition for adding diversity and life to the aquarium landscape.
