The Sheep Detectives arrives at Victory Cinema as one of the most delightful and inventive films of 2026 — a murder-mystery comedy that is simultaneously a treat for children and a genuinely clever piece of filmmaking for adults. Based on Leonie Swann’s beloved 2005 novel Three Bags Full, the film has earned 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and is being spoken of in the same breath as Knives Out for its wit, warmth, and the sheer originality of its premise. THE STORY George Hardy — played by Hugh Jackman — is a shepherd who loves his sheep and raises them only for their wool. Every night, without fail, he reads aloud a murder mystery to his flock, never suspecting that not only can they understand every word, but that they argue among themselves for hours afterwards about whodunnit. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances on the farm, the sheep realise at once that it was murder — and that they, having absorbed a lifetime of detective fiction through George’s nightly readings, are uniquely qualified to solve it. The local policeman, Tim Derry — played by Nicholas Braun — has never solved a serious crime in his life. The sheep conclude, with perfectly reasonable logic, that they will have to do it themselves. And so they leave their meadow for the first time, venture into the human world, and discover that reality is considerably more complicated than it appears in the pages of a murder mystery novel. The result is a film that is funny, moving, and unexpectedly profound — one that uses a flock of detective sheep as a lens through which to explore grief, memory, loyalty, and the stories we tell the ones we love. THE CAST Hugh Jackman plays George Hardy with characteristic warmth. By his own account, he said yes to the film after reading just 25 pages of the script. His portrayal of the shepherd who unknowingly educates his flock in the art of detection anchors the emotional heart of the film, even though his time on screen is limited to the film’s first act. Nicholas Braun — best known internationally for his role in Succession — plays Tim Derry, the hapless local cop who finds himself entirely out of his depth when a body turns up in a field. His performance has been singled out by critics as one of the film’s great comic pleasures. Molly Gordon plays Rebecca Hampstead, George’s estranged daughter, whose relationship with her father gives the mystery an undertow of inherited grief and family tension that runs quietly beneath the comedy. Nicholas Galitzine, Chris O’Dowd, Hong Chau, Tosin Cole, Conleth Hill, and Regina Hall round out the live-action cast, while Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein lend their voices to members of the flock. The sheep themselves are voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Emma Thompson — three of the finest comic performers working in English-language cinema today. Their voice work has been widely praised as essential to the film’s success, bringing distinct personalities and genuine depth to characters who happen to be sheep. THE MAKERS The film is directed by Kyle Balda, best known for Minions: The Rise of Gru and Despicable Me 3. Balda has spoken about being immediately drawn to the script’s themes of grief and the power of stories, and brings to the film the same precision of comic timing that characterised his work in animation. The screenplay is by Craig Mazin — the writer and creator behind The Last of Us — who adapts Leonie Swann’s novel with intelligence and enormous affection for its characters. The film is produced by Lindsay Doran, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner under Working Title Films — the legendary British production company behind Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, and countless other films that have defined English-language cinema for three decades. Lord Miller Productions, the company behind The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is also among the producers. MUSIC & TECHNICAL The score is composed by Christophe Beck, one of Hollywood’s most accomplished film composers, whose credits include Frozen, Ant-Man, and Edge of Tomorrow. Cinematography is by George Steel. Editing is by Martin Walsh, Paul Machliss, and Al LeVine. A remarkable technical achievement underlies the film’s deceptively simple visual world. The actors worked with life-sized sheep puppets and cardboard stand-ins on set, with CGI sheep composited into the live-action footage in post-production. The result is a seamless blend of real environments and animated characters that gives the film a warm, storybook quality entirely its own. POST-CREDIT SCENE The Sheep Detectives features a post-credit scene. Stay in your seat when the credits begin. FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY The Sheep Detectives is suitable for family audiences. Children and adults alike will find much to enjoy — the comedy works on multiple levels, and the film’s themes of loss, memory, and the love between a person and the creatures they care for are handled with genuine tenderness.
