Transvaal Paul Kruger T-shirt
Paul Kruger was a key figure among the Boer settlers, deeply committed to preserving Boer independence in the face of British imperial expansion. Elected President of the South African Republic in 1883, Kruger guided the Transvaal through a turbulent period marked by rapid economic change following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand. His government sought to maintain Boer political control despite the influx of foreign miners, known as Uitlanders, whose grievances eventually provided Britain with a pretext for intervention. Kruger’s firm stance against British interference and his efforts to secure international recognition for the republic reflected his steadfast nationalism. During the Anglo Boer War (1899–1902), Kruger became an emblem of defiance, even as the Transvaal ultimately fell to British forces. Exiled in Europe until his death in 1904, Paul Kruger remains a revered figure in Afrikaner history, symbolising independence, faith and resistance to imperial domination.
