The Field Club — Birdseed, by the Field - Preorder now first first delivery in November 2026
You know how a good bottle of wine tells you the vineyard, the field, even the year? We thought birdseed should work the same way. Every bag of Field Club birdseed comes from one named field — the Flat Square, on Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire. It's 30 acres. It is not flat. It is not square. Nobody currently working here named it, and we've stopped asking why. What it is doing is growing five crops for your garden birds, and — before you've even opened a bag — for the wild birds already living in it. THE FARM Lower Blakemere Farm has been farmed by the same family since 1990. It's not a birdseed farm that discovered marketing. It's a working farm that happens to have realised its birdseed field is more interesting than almost anything else it grows. We farm the whole place on the same principle: soil covered, roots in the ground, livestock in the system, biology doing its job. We're not experts and we don't have it all figured out. But 63 bird species have been recorded here, including two on the UK Red List, and that number keeps going the right direction. So something is working. The Flat Square itself is mixed on purpose, not tidy on purpose. Five crops in one field, sown together, because five crops feed more mouths — wild and garden — than one crop ever could. We leave the margins rough and the edges alone. It looks less neat than a single-crop field. It does a great deal more. THE BIRDS THIS FIELD IS ALREADY FEEDING Skylarks nest in the Flat Square. Yellowhammers feed along its edges. Finches strip seed heads before we get near it with a combine. On one short walk past this field we counted: Skylark · Yellowhammer · Blackcap · Tree Pipit · Spotted Flycatcher · Lesser Whitethroat · Song Thrush · Robin · Chiffchaff — plus Blackbird, Wren, Raven and Carrion Crow. Yellowhammer and Song Thrush are both Red List species in the UK — meaning their numbers have declined seriously enough to earn the highest conservation concern rating. They're here because of the hedges, the field margins, and the insects living in soil we try not to disturb. No bugs, no birds. No trees, nowhere to nest. It's not complicated, we just have to actually do it. So here's the thing most birdseed can't tell you: by the time your bag is filled, this field has already spent a whole summer feeding wild birds, just by existing the way it does. Your garden birds are next in line, not first.
