Common Hop Nordbrau Exceptional vigor and high-yielding qualities make this famous female hop variety a favorite for home brewing and ornamental gardening alike. A fast-growing herbaceous climber, Nordbrau (or "Northern Brew") quickly sends up rough, twining stems clothed in deeply lobed, textured green leaves each spring, rapidly covering trellises, pergolas, or unsightly walls. From mid-summer into autumn, it bears dense clusters of aromatic, pale green, cone-like flowers that release a distinct fragrance and are prized for adding traditional bitterness and aroma to beers. The plant dies back completely to its hardy underground rootstock in winter, only to return with immense energy the following spring. Site: Sheltered, needs support: eg trellis Soil: Well-drained, moist and fertile acid to neutral soil Position: Full sun for best cones, but tolerates partial shade Season of interest: Spring to autumn Hardiness: Fully hardy Height: 13-26’ (4-8m) Spread: 5-8’ (1.5-2.5m) Image 1 by Andreas Rockstein cropped and licensed under CC BY 2.0 Image 2 by Lexy5by5 cropped and licensed under CC BY-ND 2.0
