Gluck: Armide - Moizan, Lewis, Cuénod, Howitt, Combon; Appia. London, 1952
Armide Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714 - 1787) DESCRIPTION Gluck’s sorely underappreciated Armide receives star treatment in a performance that, despite predating the period-performance revolution by several decades, captures much of the late-Classical, proto-Romantic character so distinctive to Gluck’s writing. Geneviève Moizan sings the title role with considerable dramatic authority, creating a monumental figure without sacrificing Classical restraint. Richard Lewis brings sweetness of tone to Renaud, while Hugues Cuénod contributes characteristic style and élan in his roles as the Danish Knight and Artimideer.
