Angama Mara offers a luxury safari stay high above Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The name comes from the Swahili word for suspended in mid air. This fits a lodge set 300 meters above the floor of the Mara Triangle. The owners run Angama Mara themselves, and they have designed it with real care. The lodge pairs elegant, glass fronted tented suites with genuine Kenyan hospitality. Filmmakers also shot several scenes from Out of Africa on this same site. Because of this history, the dramatic setting still captivates guests today. Location Angama Mara sits on the rim of the Siria Oloololo Escarpment. It overlooks the Mara Triangle in the western Maasai Mara National Reserve. A conservancy formed by local Maasai communities manages this section of the reserve. So your stay also supports conservation and community development. You can reach the lodge by a scheduled flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. The flight takes around 45 minutes and lands at Angama’s private airfield. From there, a short transfer brings you to the lodge. Road transfers from other camps in the greater Mara are available too. Accommodation Angama Mara comprises two separate camps, North Camp and South Camp. Each camp holds 15 tented suites plus its own lounge and restaurant area. Every suite covers more than 100 square meters, including an outside deck. Floor to ceiling glass fronts frame sweeping views of the Mara below. South Camp suites face south east, while North Camp suites look directly east over the plains. As a result, North Camp offers a slightly more dramatic outlook. Interiors combine contemporary design with African character. You will find super king beds, polished parquet floors, and touches of Maasai red throughout. Four family suites are also available for guests traveling with children. Dining Dining at Angama Mara feels refined yet relaxed. The kitchen builds its menus around fresh, seasonal ingredients grown in the lodge’s own garden. Menus draw on both local and international flavors. You can eat in the stylish dining room, on the terrace overlooking the plains, or out in the bush. Bush breakfasts and picnic lunches often become a highlight of the stay, especially when served under a lone tree on the open plains. You can also arrange a private dinner in a lantern lit forest or on the escarpment. Throughout the day, a self service bar keeps drinks close at hand. Things to Do Angama Mara offers a wide range of activities. These suit first time visitors and returning safari travelers alike. Game drives take you deep into the Mara Triangle to spot the Big Five. During migration season, you can also witness the Great Migration up close. Guided walks, hot air balloon safaris, and Maasai cultural experiences round out the itinerary. You can even watch a traditional dance performance. If you enjoy staying active, you can join a morning run along the escarpment with local staff. A photographic studio on site lets you learn from professional photographers or book a private tutorial. Back at the lodge, an infinity pool, a gym, and a library give you space to relax between excursions.
