North Rustico

This serigraph was created in 2007. The edition number is 10/45. Silkscreen technique, also called Serigraphy, employs a sheet of material (traditionally silk, now more commonly nylon) on which the image has been blocked-out using wax or glue (or similar impermeable adhesive substance) by the artist. Ink is then squeezed over the screen onto the paper beneath, only reaching the paper where the glue or wax does not block the ink. The image is formed either by the ink or in the space defined by the ink. As with colour woodcut prints, each colour has a separate screen. The artist therefore builds the image from lighter colours to dark. The artist therefore builds the image from lighter colours to dark. ARTIST STATEMENT Travelling around in fine weather is a Maritime adventure. The time of day or tide changes the look of a place. An hours’ drive can put you in a different kind of geography. A hundred million years ago, Nova Scotia hugged Europe and Africa, keeping souvenirs of each. Each of these hand made pieces began with hours of drawing while on camping trips with my thirty six year old motorcycle. Weeks in the studio produce a screen print of over twenty layers of ink. Like the layers of the drumlins, the granite and the beaches, they endure because they are genuine.- Robert Rutherford
