These are considered auspicious motifs symbolizing wealth, prosperity, and nobility. 辛島西朗 Karashima Nishiro (active 1800-1868) Japanese painter active during the late Edo period, particularly around the mid-19th century. Although many details of his life, including his dates of birth and death, remain unknown, surviving works indicate that he had close connections with the Iwami region of present-day Shimane Prefecture, particularly the area around Oda, home to the historic Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. One of his notable surviving works is the portrait "Yasuhara Bitchu," painted in 1859 (Ansei 6).
