Winemaker Notes The vineyard where the Small Berry Mourvèdre grows is a small acreage block that consistently produces one of our most complex and concentrated Mourvèdres. Vines in this block were first planted in 1910 and are on their own roots, which make this one of California’s most historic vineyards. The vines have survived because they grow in the deep delta sands which keeps the phylloxera root louse in check. Winds from the delta, which borders the vineyard to the north, help slow grape ripening and retain acidity. This vineyard has always provided an intense concentration of flavors, due in part to the small yield that we receive. Silky texture with plum, currant, and dark berry compote characters dominate and lead to a long and lush finish. About Cline Family Cellars Fred started Cline Family Cellars in 1982 in Oakley, California, making his first vintages from original plantings of Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, and Carignane, some of which dated back to the 1880s. In 1989, we purchased a 350-acre horse farm in Sonoma-Carneros and moved the winery here. This is where we raised our seven children. Fred was one of the original Rhone Rangers and began planting vineyards dedicated to Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Since those first plantings, we continued to plant vineyards throughout Sonoma County, expanding to include more classic varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE As a family-owned winery, sustainability is our priority for many reasons. Fred and Nancy knew they wanted to pass down the winery and vineyards to their children, so they didn’t use pesticides and herbicides to grow their grapes. They treated the land with great respect. Cline is committed to carrying on their legacy in the vineyards and in business practices. In 2018 our vineyards and winery became Certified California Sustainable and Sonoma County Sustainable.
