Mother and Child Squat Lekythos – After Sotades

Red-Figure Squat Lekythos with Mother and Child A red-figure squat lekythos decorated with a tender domestic scene: a seated young woman, perhaps a mother, beside an infant seated on a potty. The composition is inspired by a low cup by Sotades from the celebrated Sotades Tomb, found in Athens and dated to the mid-5th century BC, ca. 460–450 BC. Quiet and intimate, the scene offers a rare glimpse into the world of women and small children in classical Athens. Rather than presenting motherhood in an idealized or symbolic way, it captures an everyday moment of care and early childhood.
